Responsible Fishing
It is important for many different reasons to preserve our fish stocks and look after our marine environment. Fishing is a wonderful way to relax, enjoy the outdoors, catch your own dinner and take that photo to take home and brag to your mates.
But if we’re going to enjoy this great Australian pastime for years to come, we need to be responsible about the way we fish. Some of the things we do at Fish Darwin are:
- Use circle hooks, which hook through the lip or mouth rather than the gut
- Never over-fish a reef, resting areas in a pattern through-out the year
- Work out which fishing spots work well on which tides and then stick to those tides, rather than going to that spot on every tide and fishing for everything and anything
- Catch and release is important and should be done correctly and only if the fish has a chance at survival. If not, it’s time to fillet you catch up for dinner!
- Look after the eco-system by releasing any small by-catch such as reddies and stripies.
- It’s good to use the smallest anchor possible, whilst still being safe. I aim to anchor in front of the reef with the boat atop the reef. This way you’re in the right spot with your lines, but you’re not damaging the reef with your anchor
- We strictly abide by Northern Territory fishing possession limits [/ulist] Whilst we encourage catch and release, we are also very happy to assist you in taking some fish home for the freezer.
